Okanagan wine tour, episode cinqo

Continuing on the wine tour down the road to the beautiful Summerhill Pyramid Organic Winery.

Tasting fee is $5 for 4 wines, refunded upon purchase. Of course in order to maximize our tasting, my wife and I picked mostly different wines and passed them back and forth to try more than just four.

2012 Small Lot Pinot Gris

Notes of pear intertwine with the usual green apple and minerality that you see from so many BC Pinot Gris.

Rating: 74

2012 Alive White

70% Pinot Gris, 15% Pinot Blanc, 5% Gewürztraminer, 5% Viognier, 3% Chardonnay, 2% Muscat

Sometimes a nice blend can be more than the sum of it's parts, which is the case here, considering that 85% of this is made up of grapes I don't usually get excited about.

Notes of pear and green apple again but less so than the straight Pinot Gris, and the smaller-quantity grapes add a very small hint of sweetness that balances the acidity and minerality nicely.
Rating: 78

2012 Pinot Noir Rose

An interesting balance of strawberry and earthy, raspberry and floral. The low alcohol content (10.7) really lets the fruit shine through.

Rating: 82

2011 Pinot Noir

The tasting notes on this say we should smell "forest floor". Not sure about you but I'm not in the habit of dropping to my knees and smelling the floor of the forest, when I'm in a forest. Anyway, I get what they are saying, there is definitely a grassy quality on the nose, with just a touch of cinnamon to add complexity.

Rating: 81

2010 Cabernets

70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Cabernet Franc

Vanilla and cherry aromas dominate your nose, with enticing hints of vanilla slipping into the fruity finish. Tannins are a bit harsh, suggesting this would much improve with some careful cellaring.

Rating: 81

2009 Merlot

I loved the velvety mouth feel here, and although the tannins are also still a tad firm, it's a pleasant drink now. If you have the patience to cellar it, as we will be doing to the bottle we bought, I think it will pay off handsomely. Notes of cherry with a tiny bit of smokiness on the finish. At $29.99, a real steal.

Rating: 86
